Jay MacDougall
Jay MacDougall is the founder of Built In Growth, a consulting practice that helps small business owners increase profitability and clarity without chasing endless growth or sacrificing their time.
With more than 23 years of experience in sales, marketing, media, and business advisory roles, Jay works with owners who feel stuck despite doing many things right. His approach focuses on uncovering growth already inside the business through better pricing, sharper decisions, and a deeper understanding of customer behaviour.
Jay is also a Business Advisor with the Centre for Entrepreneurship Education and Development (CEED) in Nova Scotia, where he supports entrepreneurs at every stage of the business lifecycle.
The Longer Version: My Story & How I Work
Built In Growth was created for business owners who don’t need motivation. They need perspective.
Most of the clients I work with have viable businesses. Customers exist. Revenue comes in. But the business feels heavier than it should. Margins are thin. Decisions feel reactive. Growth conversations always default to “more customers,” even when capacity, time, or energy are already stretched.
That’s where my work begins.
I’ve spent more than 23 years building, selling, leading, and advising businesses across sales, marketing, and media. My career has included roles as a newsroom editor, morning radio host, media sales leader, and marketing agency owner. Each chapter sharpened my understanding of how businesses actually grow, and just as importantly, how they stall.
Today, through Built In Growth, I help owners slow down just enough to see their business clearly. Together, we examine assumptions around pricing, value, operations, and customer demand. Very often, growth doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from doing fewer things with greater intention.
Alongside my consulting practice, I serve as a Business Advisor with the Centre for Entrepreneurship Education and Development (CEED), supporting entrepreneurs across Nova Scotia through validation, planning, and growth decisions. This work keeps me grounded in real-world constraints and ensures my advice remains practical, not theoretical.
At the centre of my approach is curiosity.
The strongest businesses I’ve encountered are not driven by rigid plans or bravado. They ask better questions. They listen carefully. They treat business as an ongoing research project rather than a fixed blueprint.
Built In Growth exists to support that mindset. My role is not to hand over a playbook, but to help you think more clearly, prioritize what truly matters, and build a business that supports both your goals and your life outside of work.
