Owner Return Review

Your business can be doing well and still ask too much of you.

The Owner Return Review is an independent look at how your business is working today, where it's creating unnecessary drag, and what I believe you should do next.

Money
Is the effort producing the financial return it should?

Time
Has growth bought back your time, or just given you more to manage?

Role
Are you doing the work where you're most valuable?

Capacity
Are you making full use of the people, customers and resources you already have?

You've spent years building your business. You've found customers, made investments, solved problems, added tools and systems, and maybe hired people to help.

Most of those decisions made sense when you made them.

But businesses accumulate decisions. What worked two years ago may not be helping today. A person you hired to take work off your plate may have created a different kind of work. A service you added may be consuming more capacity than it's worth. Marketing may be bringing in customers when what you really need is better profit from the customers you already have.

And when you're busy running the business, it's difficult to step outside of it long enough to see those things clearly.

That's what the Owner Return Review is for.

A business can be doing well and still ask too much of its owner.

Revenue matters. Profit matters.
But they're not the only things your business should return to you.
I look at your business through four lenses:

Money

Is the business producing the financial return it should from the customers, capacity and resources you already have?

Time

As the business has grown, has it bought back any of your time? Or has every stage of growth simply given you more to manage?

Role

Are you spending your time doing the work where you create the most value? Or have administration, coordination and other responsibilities gradually taken over your day?

Capacity

What already exists inside the business that isn't being fully used? That could be people, time in the schedule, existing customers, technology, systems or your own expertise.

You don't need to decide which one is your problem before we meet. That's my job.

How the Owner Return Review works

1. Owner Snapshot

Before we meet, I'll ask you for some background on the business, why you started it, what it looks like today, and what you want it to give you. That last part matters.

I'm not interested in imposing someone else's definition of growth on your business. I want to understand what better means to you.

2. 90-Minute Diagnostic

We'll spend 90 minutes together looking under the hood.

I'll want to understand what you do, what your team does, how customers move through the business, where your time goes, what's making money, where you've invested, what you've tried, and what doesn't seem to be paying off the way you expected.

This isn't a standardized audit. I'll follow the business and the questions that emerge from our conversation.

3. Analysis

After we meet, I do the homework.

I may ask for a small amount of additional information if there's something we need to verify, such as sales by service, scheduling information or another piece of business data. Then I step back and look at the whole picture.

Where is the mismatch between what you want from the business and how the business is actually operating?  What's creating drag? What deserves your attention? And just as importantly, what doesn't?

4. Your Owner Return Report

You'll receive a written report capturing my assessment and recommendations. I'll tell you what I see, where I believe the important mismatches are, and what I think you should do about them. The recommendations are prioritized. You won't get a giant list of things you could theoretically improve.

You'll know what I would do first and why.

5. Recommendation Session

We'll meet again for 60 minutes to walk through the report.

I'll explain my thinking, answer your questions, and give you the opportunity to challenge anything that doesn't feel right based on what you know about the business.

You'll leave with the report, the recommendations and a clear understanding of what I believe should happen next.

Who is this for?

The Owner Return Review is designed for established, owner-operated businesses.

It's a good fit if:

  • You've been operating for at least two years.
  • You have real customers and meaningful revenue.
  • You're still actively involved in the day-to-day business.
  • You've invested in people, marketing, technology, systems or other attempts to make the business work better.
  • Something still feels harder, slower, less profitable or more complicated than it should.
  • You're willing to share enough information for us to have an honest conversation about what's actually happening.
  • You're open to hearing an outside opinion, including one that may challenge what you've been doing.

This isn't for people with an idea for a business, or who have just launched a start-up.  You've already built the business.

Now we're looking at how well the business you've built is working for you.

Why work with me?

I've spent about 25 years working with and alongside business owners.

I've been an entrepreneur myself. I've managed people, sold to businesses, worked in marketing, built and sold a business, developed and sold software, and spent roughly the last decade increasingly focused on advising entrepreneurs and business owners.

I've also made some of the mistakes I now recognize in other businesses.

I've overcommitted. I've held onto work I should have delegated. I've successfully marketed businesses that weren't operationally ready for more customers. And I've seen what happens when years of individually reasonable decisions accumulate into a business that's harder to run than it needs to be.

That experience shapes how I approach this work. I'm not coming in with a predetermined answer or trying to sell you the next service. I'm there to understand the business you've actually built and tell you what I see.

What happens afterward?

The Review has a clear ending, but our relationship doesn't have to.

If something changes six months from now and you'd like another outside perspective, past Owner Return Review clients can book individual advisory sessions with me.

And if I come across an article, program, funding opportunity, event or resource that connects to something we've discussed, don't be surprised if I send it your way.

I want knowing me to continue being useful.

Ready to look at your business from the outside?

You've spent plenty of time working in your business.

The Owner Return Review gives you an opportunity to step outside of it and ask:

What is this business returning to me, and what could it return if it worked a little better?

"I found working with Jay really insightful and refreshing. He was honest and direct when I needed it, and wasn’t afraid to push back on ideas I was holding onto so I could think about my business more realistically."

Frequently asked questions

How long do the Business Support Sessions run?

Most engagements run over 30–45 days and include 3–4 focused working sessions. The goal is to create real movement without dragging things out.

Is this consulting, coaching, or something else?

This is advisory work. I don’t run marketing campaigns, rebuild operations, or push growth at all costs. My role is to help you see what’s happening in your business clearly and make better decisions about what to change.

Do I need to know whether I’m trying to save time, money, or energy before we start?

No. Most businesses touch more than one of these areas. The first part of the work is identifying which pressure matters most right now and focusing there.

What kind of results should I expect?

Clients typically walk away with clearer priorities, fewer decisions weighing on them, and one or two practical changes already in motion that reduce pressure in the business.

Jay MacDougall

I work with owners of established businesses who are busy, capable, and feeling pressure from different directions. My role is not to sell tactics or push growth at all costs. It is to help you see what is actually happening in your business and make clearer decisions about what to change.
